    • 3 More Weekends to Recycle Phone Books January 29, 2010
I know, I know, your blogger (that would be me) has been negligent in blogging. Oh how the mighty have fallen! From posting daily, to posting weekly of late, I haven’t posted in two weeks. I may be too busy to blog, but we can never be too busy to recycle. I received this in an [...]
    • Colleen Hanabusa and Congressional Residency January 14, 2010
With the 1st Congressional District (urban Honolulu) race heating up to replace Congressman Neil Abercrombie who will step down on February 28, I’ve been having more and more discussions with friends and acquaintances. Just recently, a friend asked me on Facebook: How is it that [State Senate President Colleen] Hanabusa can hold a seat in Waianae on [. […]
    • Time For a (go! Away) Party January 5, 2010
It’s funny sometimes how fate (or inspiration) just surprises you sometimes. Just this morning, I found myself up way too early. Then I noted that I renewed the registration for capsun.org for another year. I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t had time to blog as often as I’d like. But then my friend Blaine [...]
    • GOOD-bye 2009! December 31, 2009
On this the last day of 2009, I find myself reflecting on the year that was, as I’m sure many of you have. Travel, work, and other commitments have really kept me busy, so I haven’t had time to write up end-of-year wrap-up posts like I did in 2008 (like this, or this, and this). As [...]
    • Answers for A Christmas Game December 24, 2009
Mahalo to all of you for stopping by and playing my Christmas Game for 2009. In case you still need some of the answers, they are listed here below. So, how did everyone do? Maybe more importantly, how long did it take? We usually give about 30 minutes for people to play the game, but [...]
    • A Christmas Game December 18, 2009
UPDATE (Monday, 12/21): All but one of the answers is in English and the answer to #1 is “Oh Holy Night.” Enjoy the rest of the game and come back Thursday for all the answers. For the past few years, my wife and I have played this Christmas game with family, friends, and even her students. [...]
    • A Glee-Gowalla Mash-Up December 8, 2009
Sometimes, I think I get a little too serious, especially here on capsun.org, although I do tend to allow myself to be a little more casual on my photo blog. But today will be a “for fun” post, and it’s dedicated to Melissa Chang (aka @Melissa808) who has waited over two weeks for me to [...]
    • Another One Bites the Dust December 4, 2009
Yesterday, I received an email from Josh Levinson, President and CEO of Community Links Hawaii. We’ve gotten to know each other over the past year through our involvement in the Tables for Ten program spearheaded by Na Lei Aloha Foundation, the sponsors of the Bridge of Friendship and the annual Memorial Day lantern floating ceremony. [...]
    • Good News for Hawaiian Airlines Passengers December 1, 2009
This is my make-up post to Hawaiian Airlines, for not blogging about their 80th birthday, which they celebrated on November 11. Belated Happy Birthday! For those who fly between the islands and who choose not to support that bad airline I despise so much, I have some good news from my favorite airline, Hawaiian Airlines. Remember [...]
    • A Lifetime of Thanks November 25, 2009
I’ve been thinking long and hard about an appropriate post in honor of Thanksgiving. Then last week I joined my wife for an alumni reception for her college, Loyola Marymount University in LA. It’s called the “Princeton of the Pacific” and one of their biggest donors has been William Hannon, as evidenced by several buildings [...]

Cinnabon in a Can

I found these at Costco last week and just had to try them. Granted, it’s not quite the same as Cinnabon, but it’s really the sauce that makes the dish. Close enough for a Saturday morning when they’re still closed.

Happy Retirement, Folks

Today, 6 of my coworkers are retiring. While 2009 has been a year of challenges, I hope their 2010 will be joyous, peaceful, and happy as they enjoy their well-earned retirement.

How’s that sign they had posted in the office yesterday?

Aloha Kalikimaka 2009

After my Grinch blog post, I thought I’d better share something more befitting the spirit of the holidays.

So here, for your viewing enjoyment, are photos of two special Christmas trees. These are courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines. The top tree is from their main Premier Club lounge and the other is from their new lounge, occupying the space formerly used as Aloha Airlines’ Suite 737.

Aloha Kalikimaka!

My Favorite Christmas Ornament This Yeart

Yep, it’s the Grinch.

Now don’t take that to mean I don’t like Christmas. I just don’t like setting up and breaking down the Christmas tree and lights.

And besides, isn’t that grin just a bit endearing?

Good Luck, Mike

We celebrated yet another departure at the office. This time it was for our student assistant, Mike. After a 2-year stint with us, he’s moving on to a job that’s more in-line with his career goals.

We wish him all the best, but we’ll miss his calming and helpful demeanor.

Did you see the food we fed him on his last day?

Holiday Kisses

I’ve seen and bought the normal red, green, and silver Kisses Hershey’s puts out during the holidays. But this was the first time I’ve ever seen Cherry Cordial Kisses. So of course I bought a bag. They’re quite good.

Christmas Party Time

How can you not get in the holiday spirit when you see something like this? This is the cake my wife bought for her school’s faculty Christmas party.

At the 2009 State of OHA

There’s something to be said about the feeling one gets being in a cathedral as opposed to a regular church. This is at St. Andrew’s Cathedral.
